The Belgian Blue – "For Wards Weight / Summersweeps" CD

It all started in the streets of Vienna, when a pandemic stood in the way of playing live gigs anywhere else. Lead singer Pádraig MacMahon had just moved from his home in Baltinglass, Ireland and met founding partner Ian Strahn while busking. Being locked into a broken down tram gained them three more band members, and The Belgian Blue was born. The trinational band splits their time between Vienna and Dublin. Characterized by the different influences of the members’ background and upbringing, their music streches from Folk-Rock to Americana, seasoned with experimental electronic elements. The result is a collection of stories and sounds from all over the world, merging into an experience that goes beyond the sum of its parts. During their live performances, the five members aim to create a space to connect, for and with any likeminded, music-loving people. The band quickly gained a large underground following in the city, selling out their first headline concert at Arena Wien within a year - as an independent band. They subsequently performed to full houses in Austria, Germany, Czech Republic and Ireland. Though consisting of five core members, The Belgian Blue see themselves more as a collective that interacts with the music scene, frequently sharing stages with musician friends. The band has performed alongside artists such as Glen Hansard (in The Royal Albert Hall), Imelda May, The Ocelots, The Swell Season and Jessica Pratt. Their debut EP Summersweeps (2025) was recorded with Austrian producer Jakob Herber (Endless Wellness, Bilderbuch, doppelfinger). Written during a period of travel and isolation in the rural northwestern US, it weaves together contemporary folk songwriting, field recordings and experimental production. The Belgian Blue has pockets full of fun tales surrounding their band name, such as taking inspiration from Irish pub conversations about cattle; or mistakenly being hired by the Belgian embassy as a musical guest – without being Belgian at all. If one thing’s for sure, the The Belgian Blue are storytellers. Offstage over a pint, but no less when it comes to their pointed, impressionist lyrics, that read like poetry. Distinguished by their raw and high-energy live performances and a strong word-of-mouth, the band has built their career from scratch. Signing with Viennese Indie-Label Ink Music in 2026, The Belgian Blue are set to release their first ever vinyl and expand their project further, still keeping their DIY-approach and remaining close to their indie roots.
